The single mom found herself dialing countless numbers in search of a lender. "I was calling numbers just right and left," Edie said.Her journey took a turn for the better when she landed at the Family Housing Advisory Service, a HUD-certified housing counseling agency. Their expert advice helped her move just minutes away into her second home, with a basement and second level. Movers are already loading a moving truck so Edie's three adopted grandchildren will have plenty of room to stretch out and grow."We found some funders weren't super excited about doing downpayment assistance anymore," said Denise Parker with Family Housing Advisory Services.The little-known buy-down grant is saving Rebecca $175 per month on her mortgage."As the interest rates started going up, I thought, you know, I don't hear anything about paydowns anymore. And so now you see them coming back in the market because the rates are going up again," Parker said.Rate increases and home prices have gone up astronomically."It's really getting a lot more challenging for our entry-level buyers to be competitive, to be able to have the funds that they need to purchase a home," said Jennifer Tucker, a realtor with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate.
