LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - The public is invited to several upcoming forums to learn how NEST Education Savings Plans help families navigate post-secondary education costs.
NEST 529 is a federal college savings program based out of Nebraska that serves people in all 50 states. Since 2001, Nebraska Educational Savings Trust (NEST) has been enabling people to save and invest in their child, grandchild and loved one’s education.
“As parents, grandparents, we’re always looking for ways to create opportunity for our young folks, for our children, and our grandchildren; what better opportunity is there to provide for a child or grandchild than the opportunity of higher education”.
Everyone has the ability to access NEST 529 and reap the benefits of the program.
“By investing in our child or grandchild’s education, we can reduce the amount of debt that they might have,” Briese said.
Briese believes that student debt puts an immense weight on the economy and those within it, causing people not to pursue a higher education.
“Burdensome student debt can force young people to put off many of their life altering decisions such as getting married, having a family, buying a house,” Briese said.
According to Briese, there is a workforce crisis in Nebraska, with roughly 60,000 unfilled jobs.
“We’re not talking about just bachelor’s degrees here. We’re talking about four year schools, two year schools, trade schools, technical schools, even apprenticeships, we’re talking about matching up advanced skills with workforce needs.”
The hour-long forum includes a welcome from the Nebraska State Treasurer’s Office and presentation about what a 529 account is, ways to open one, and important considerations for contributing to a loved one’s future. Parents, family members and legal guardians as well as financial advisors, human resource and other professionals are invited.
