School Resource Officers in Omaha-area schools have used force on students at least 63 times over the last five years, according to records reviewed by the Flatwater Free Press. The officers from the Omaha Police Department and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office have used use of force on and handcuff students as young as 11 and 12. Black students were the majority of these incidents, accounting for roughly 15% of the current school population. The frequency of force used in schools is comparable to standard patrol officer interactions with the public, according OPD spokesman Neal Bonacci. The Douglas County Sherriff's Office also provided SROs to 10 schools, with around 8,600 students total, since August 2021 and August of this year. Critics worry that officers may be used too often to handle routine discipline, particularly on minority students. In 2019, state legislation aims to better define the role of resource officers as separate from school disciplinarians.
